SpaceData, a space technology company based in Tokyo, today announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Inovor Technologies, Australia’s preferred satellite bus manufacturer and subsystems developer headquartered in Adelaide, South Australia, to pursue business development and build a cooperative relationship in the field of space situational awareness (SSA) and space domain awareness (SDA).
The MOU was announced on July 7 at a reception hosted by the Space Industry Association of Australia (SIAA), held in Tokyo alongside SPACETIDE 2026, one of the largest space business conferences in the Asia-Pacific region.
Background
As the number of satellites and the volume of space debris continue to grow, space situational awareness (SSA) and space domain awareness (SDA), the ability to track and understand objects and activities in orbit,have become increasingly critical to the safe and sustainable use of space. In particular, space-based SSA/SDA, in which satellites in orbit observe other space objects, is gaining momentum worldwide as an approach less constrained by weather and geography than ground-based observation.
Founded in 2012, Inovor Technologies designs, builds, tests, and operates small satellites providing end to end satellite missions solutions within Australia and the region.. Inovor plans to launch a space-based SSA/SDA satellite constellation called “Hyperion” in 2027. While deployed in low Earth orbit (LEO), the satellite will be capable of observing objects as far away as geostationary orbit (GEO), approximately 36,000 km above the Earth.
Japan and Australia have been deepening cooperation in the space and security domains, across both government and industry. SpaceData has likewise been accelerating its SSA/SDA initiatives, including a business partnership with France’s Look Up Space in April 2026 and the launch of its space AI platform “SpaceBrain” in June 2026. This MOU builds on this momentum in Japan–Australia collaboration and on the complementary strengths of the two companies.

As the use of space expands, managing collision risks posed by satellites and space debris and responding to security threats have become common challenges for the international community. Through this MOU, SpaceData will deepen Japan–Australia collaboration in the SSA/SDA field and contribute to space resilience — keeping space stable, safe, and continuously usable.
